After Edward Hopper's Gas

I'm currently participating in a group show called, Fabulous Fakes. Each artist has copied a famous artist's work, either exactly or in their own interpretation. I chose Edward Hopper's Gas, which is an oil painting, but I used watercolor and fountain pen inks. It was interesting to study his technical mastery, but most importantly for me, is the visual poetry in his work.

After Edward Hopper's Gas, Stephen D'Amato, 2024,
watercolor and fountain ink pens, framed 11x14 inches,
available for purchase at The Artist Framer in Cranford, NJ.

Back Of The Apartments On North Ave.

Back Of The Apartments On North Ave.  Watercolor and Ink   8 x 8 inches

sold

This painting features a view of the back of the apartments on North Avenue, in Cranford. It's kind of depressing looking in real life, but I wanted to focus on what one section could look like, with a warmer touch, that some residents have added.
I also like the old looking fire escapes that the residents use as their entrance. It reminds me of the depression era of life in the 1930s. I’ve been working on this theme for quite some time now and hope some of the larger ones will workout soon.
Many sketches and attempts lately, but I feel I’m refining what I want to express and explore here. This particular one will be featured in an upcoming group show at The Art Framer's Slice Of Life show, in March.

Night Moves

"Night Moves", 2023 watercolor, 10 x 6 1/2 inches

This scene is taken from my Mom’s back patio. I usually am up at my Mom’s place once a week. I would sit out here late at night when most of the senior residents there were asleep. I felt a very still, quietness at those times. Very peaceful.

Self-Portrait (May 2023)

Self-Portrait, 2023, 13 x 17 inches, watercolor on Arches 140lb paper.
Framed 18 x 24 inches. $600.00

I’m happy to have completed this Self-Portrait today. I have also delivered it to the gallery, which is featuring a Self-Portrait Exhibit for the month of June.

I chose to do more of an “environment self-portrait” this time. I believe it says more about me and where I make make art and where I have created my music. My favorite books and sketch books are also there.

The exhibition is at The Artist Framer in Cranford. Opening reception is Saturday, June 3rd, 6-9pm.

"Late Afternoon Light 2"

“Late Afternoon Light 2”. Watercolor on Arches 140lb paper,
 Image size 19 x 15 inches. $600 Unframed or $750.00 framed.

It is currently framed, in a natural wood frame, 28' x 22", with a triple white mat and plexiglass. It can be sold framed or unframed.

This painting is almost identical to the previous painting featured in the previous post, entitled, "Late Afternoon Light 1". Some minor differences and this on is much larger.

"Late Afternoon Light 1"

“Late Afternoon Light 1”.  Watercolor on Arches 140lb paper, 11.5 x 9 inches. $400.00 unframed.

The home on the left side of this painting, was originally owned by 19 century Cranford resident and developer, James Rodgers. It is one of my favorite homes in Cranford. I was particularly interested in the side portions of each home and the space they share between them.

"Night Lights"

"Night Lights". Watercolor and ink. 8 x 10 inches.

This house is around the corner from me and I've noticed it for quite some time. It used to have a somewhat haunted look, before the current owners renovated it, but still has the mystery for me.
A different view with this version below.

"Refuge"

"Refuge", watercolor. 300 lb. Fabriano paper., 18” x 14”, unframed    $600.00.

Our fire escape was a great spot to hang out during those warm, early November days. I was using crutches to get around and I was avoiding using the stairs to go out. I did look forward to sitting out here to draw, paint and do some reading. The fire escape was my refuge. The flowers, herbs and vegetables in the planters, were basically finished for the season, but some decorations and ornaments still remained. The reflecting sunset sparked my interest and I decided I would expand the perspective give it a wide, comfortable feel. This painting was my last studio painting in 2022.

"Blue Skies Ahead"

 "Blue Skies Ahead"  watercolor   14" x 19"
 300 lb. Frabriano Watercolor paper
unframed  $600.00

This house caught my eye, with it’s wrap around porch and turret, viewed from around the weeping, Japanese, red maple. This painting represents a hopeful and positive outlook, while recovering from a hip procedure.

"American Gothic 4- Cranford (backview) 2022"

"American Gothic 4- Cranford (backview) 2022"

Watercolor, 22” x 13”, painted on 300 lb. Frabriano watercolor paper

Unframed, $700.00

This painting is a bit larger than my usual size paintings. This backview, of the red house on the corner, really got my attention as the sun was setting. We’ve had some extremely hot weather for a few weeks straight, so painting a snow scene from last winter was refreshing. This home has continues to inspire me.

“American Gothic 2 - Cranford 2022”

Watercolor on 300 lb. Frabriano Paper, 14" x 10", Unframed $500.00

Another painting of this house on the corner. A different angle and a play on the light. I took a bit more time with this one.

"Entrance 4 - Night"

 "Entrance 4 - Night"

Watercolor,  9 1/2" x 14", painted on 300 lb. Frabriano paper.

$600.00, Unframed

This is the final painting that’s entitled, “Entrance - 4, Night”.
A more studied and planned out version. Again with this painting, I am portraying sections of my building, that have become important and familiar in my everyday life. I choose to accentuate the light and dark areas to create a mystical drama.

"Her Childhood Home"

"Her Childhood Home", 3/2022, watercolor, 18" x 12"

$500.00, (unframed)

I was inspired to paint this scene for a few different reasons. I know that a neighbor of mine had grown up in this home, many years ago. I also love the layout of this side view and during the twilight. It had a magical glow that I knew I wanted to express in my painting. The architecture is also very unique, like many of the homes in my neighborhood. Many do not fit any type of development style. The winter, bare trees gave it the haunting effect, that I wanted to accentuate.

"Horror"

"Horror", 2005, watercolor, 30" x 22"  $700.00 (unframed)

I painted this watercolor in 2005, after the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami happened. A horrific tragedy that was devastating. So much suffering from in the war on Ukraine these days. My emotional reaction is similar.
